Vital Signs makes playful reference to the volume of wayfinding signage now present in public buildings. The work is composed of four parts and was installed in the atrium of Cardiff University Optometry Department in September 2007. The majority of the work is composed of steel and glass: over 4000 20mm diameter glass balls and at least 17 kilometres of 0.5mm diameter stainless steel cables.
On entering the building a three-dimensional arrow, just over a metre long hangs overhead and points through the inner doorway of the entrance. By the reception desk two speech bubbles hover at head-height, indicating the purpose of this area. Over the stairs a double-ended arrow hangs diagonally following the line of the staircase, and at the exit, a fourth piece literally spells out the function of this passage.
Lighting is now being installed, and detailed images and information will follow shortly
The work is due to be officially launched in early 2008
